Saturday Solemn Night Prayer

Priest: To you hidden nature, O Lord, which is neither comprehended now limited by the thought or intelligence of any creature, glory is due and hymns of thanksgiving are justly given, and adoration in heaven and on earth are rightly owed, O Lord of all, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, forever.

People: Amen.

Psalm 86

Turn your ear, O Lord, and answer me,

for I am poor and needy.

Guard my soul, for your are good.

Save the servant who trusts in you.

Have mercy on me, O Lord,

for I cry to you all the day long.

Gladden the soul of your servant,

for to you I lift up my soul.

For you are good, O Lord,

and great is your grace to all who call upon you.

Attend, O Lord, to my prayer,

and hear the sound of my cry.

On the day of distress I called you,

     and you gave answer.

There is none like you, Lord God,

and there are none like your works.

All the nations which you have made

will come and adore you, O Lord.

They will glorify your name, for you are great:

you perform wonders, you who alone are God.

Show me, Lord, your way, and I will walk in truth.

My heart will rejoice in those who fear your name.

I will thank you, O Lord my God, with all my heart,

and I will glorify your name forever.

For your grace has abounded upon me,

and you have saved my soul from Sheol below.

O God, the evil rose up against me,

and the assembly of the wicked desired my soul,

and did not remember you.

But you, Lord God, are merciful and compassionate,

longsuffering and great in grace and truth:

     turn to me and have mercy on me;

give strength to your servant,

     and save your handmaid’s son.

Accomplish good work in me,

that my enemies may see and be ashamed.

For you, O Lord, aid me and comfort me.

Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the mountain:

from where shall come my help?

My help comes from the Lord

     who made heaven and earth.

May he never allow your foot to stumble!

May he not let your guardian sleep.

No, he sleeps not nor slumbers, Israel’s guardian.

The Lord is your guardian,

he will place his right hand upon you.

By day the sun shall not smite you

nor the moon in the night.

The Lord will guard you from all evils,

the Lord will guard your soul.

The Lord will guard your going and your coming

     both now and forever.

Glory to the Father, to the Son, & to the Holy Spirit.

Halleluiah, halleluiah, halleluiah.

From age to age, amen, amen.

Turn your ear, O Lord, and answer me,

for I am poor and needy. Halleluiah.

Let us pray. Peace be with us.

Hymn of Mar Ephrem

Day and night I cry out before you.

Through the holy cross, O Lord, on which you humbled yourself, grant me restful sleep tonight, and deliver me from harm. Send to me a guardian, to protect me as I sleep, and, by your own living flesh, save me from all evil things.

My fortress, my God in whom I trust!

May the fortress of your mercy guard my soul, which is your image, may your hand protect my body, which your hands have fashioned. May the stronghold of your mercy shelter me, a mighty shield, and when I am fast asleep, may your power be my guard.

Glory to the Father, to the Son, & to the Holy Spirit!

Let my slumber come ascend, incense to your holy throne. By your mother’s intercession, keep the devil from my bed. By your sacrifice for all, chase the evil one away; your promise fulfill in me, by your cross protect my life.

From age to age, amen, amen.

O Christ, do not turn away from us, or distance yourself from your adorers, for in you do we take refuge. Guide us along your path of life, that we may all sing praise to you, Lord God!

Let all the people say amen, amen.

O holy Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus our savior, plead with us to Christ, that he may make his peace dwell among us, and guard us from all dangers during night and day.

Psalm 72:1-4

How long, O Lord, will you forget me?

Glory to you, O God.

How long, O Lord, will you forget me?

How long will you hide your face?

How long must I bear grief in my soul,

this sorrow in my heart day and night?

How long shall my enemy prevail?

Look at me, answer me, Lord my God!

Give light to my eyes lest I fall asleep in death,

lest my enemy say: “I have overcome him;”

lest my foes rejoice to see my fall.

As for me, I trust in your grace.

Let my heart rejoice in your saving help:

Let me praise the Lord who saved me.

Hymn of Mar Abraham

O savior, hear your servant’s prayer,

receive our petition, respond to our needs,

for you are the refuge and hope of the weak.

Through your help, let us conquer the evil one’s wiles,

for lo, he lays traps for our souls at all times,

and the liar, in malice, desires to beat us.

Send you power, O Lord, and cut up his snares,

lest he traps us, and we fall within sin’s abyss.

May the strength of your grace then

give strength to our weakness,

and we will please you in our deeds, O merciful one.

Make us worthy to sing, on the  day that you come,

an unceasing praise, forever, amen.

Monday Night Prayer

Priest: To you be glory from the lofty and thanksgiving from the lowly, and adoration, honor, and exaltation from all you have created and fashioned in heaven and on earth, O Lord of all, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, forever.

People: Amen.

Psalm 28

To you, O Lord, I call.

Glory to you, O God.

To you, O Lord, I call.

My, God, do not abandon me.

If you abandon me, I will be handed over

with those who have descended into the cave.

Hear the voice of my pleading as I call for help,

as I lift up my hands to your holy temple.

Do not number me among the wicked,

or with those who do evil,

who speak words of peace to their neighbors

but with evil in their hearts.

Repay them according to their works,

     and according to their malice.

For they ignore the deeds of the Lord.

May he ruin them and never rebuild them.

Blessed be the Lord for he has heard

     the sound of my pleading.

The Lord is my help and my shield;

     in him my heart trusts.

I was helped, my flesh rejoices

and I thank him with praise.

The Lord is the strength of his people,

a fortress of the salvation of his Christ.

Save your people and bless your heritage.

Be their shepherd and guide them forever.

From age to age, amen, amen.

Glory to you, O God.

Let us pray. Peace be with us.

Hymn of Mar Abba

Heaven and earth and all they contain

suffice not to confess your existence,

O being who orders all!

And too small are they both to tell of your love,

the heights of your grace, and your many mercies

that you sent our race while we were unworthy.

O good and kind one, who took on our nature,

who saved us from death and ascended to heaven,

who sits above all, as Lord and as ruler:

lo, assemblies of angels are kneeling before you,

and cry out together without ever ceasing:

holy are you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit;

to you be glory from all, forever and ever, amen.

May your mercy be upon our sins,

O Christ, O friend of the penitent voice.

Give ear to our pleading, good doctor of ours,

and remove the sores of all our malice.

For you know the suffering lot of our race:

heal all of our wounds with your good medicine.

Bestow your mercy upon our scars,

and heal us, O Lord, as you always do.

And with the dew that is of your grace,

may we cleanse our faults according to your will.

Grant us to confess your name together:

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

forever and ever, amen, amen.

Psalm 54

O God, save me by your name.

Glory to you, O God.

O God, save me by your name.

by your majesty, uphold my cause.

O God, hear my prayer.

Hearken to the words of my mouth.

For strangers have risen against me,

     the wicked seek my life.

They have no regard for you, O God.

I have God for my help; the Lord upholds my life.

Bring evil upon my enemies

and silence them by your truth,

and I will offer sacrifice to you in discernment,

and will confess that your name, O Lord, is good.

For you have delivered me from all troubles,

and my eyes have seen the fall of my enemies.

Glory to the Father, to the Son, & to the Holy Spirit.

From age to age, amen, amen.

Glory to you, O God.

Let us pray. Peace be with us.

Hymn of Mar Ephrem

Accept, O Lord, the pleading of all,

which we offer to you in petition.

Hear, O God, your servants’ voice,

and the groaning of those who praise you.

For you are our king, and in your great name

we have hope and true confidence.

Grant that we may gain one mind,

without division, in the faith,

as we confess that, by your will

all things were fashioned out of nothing.

The nature of your being cannot be searched

by creatures, O hidden being

who dwells in incomparable light

which no one may approach.

Through your fashioning, O Lord, your great richness

was made known to the works of your hands.

For you are the Lord and you are the maker,

who is mighty over all, and provides for all.

We earnestly desire the forgiveness of sins:

bestow it upon us, as you always do.

And grant that we may spiritually

apply medicine to our wounds.

We ask for mercy, O Lord of all:

supply your wealth to our poverty.

And to the wavering of those who stray

in the error and deceit of the enemy,

may your mercy be a guide for them,

that will tread the way for their consciences,

that they may know that it was in your providence

that our enslaved race has been freed.

Thus, with one perfect and innocent heart,

let us serve before you as you will,

and diligently accomplish at all times

that which is pleasing to your divinity,

and with one accord lift of praise

to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

who saved us through the headship that is from us,

and has not repaid us according to our ingratitude.

To him be glory from his adorers,

forever and ever, amen, amen.

Psalm 129

Our of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.

Glory to you, O God.

Our of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.

     Lord, hear my voice.

Let your ears be attentive

     to my voice in supplication.

If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt,

     Lord, who would survive?

But with you is plenteous forgiveness,

     for this we revere you.

My soul is counting on the Lord,

     I trust in his word.

My soul is waiting for the Lord,

more than sentinels wait for the dawn.

Let sentinels wait for the dawn

     and Israel on the Lord.

For with the Lord there is kindness,

    and plenteous redemption.

And he will redeem Israel

     from all its iniquity.

Glory to the Father, to the Son, & to the Holy Spirit.

From age to age, amen, amen.

Glory to you, O God.

Let us pray. Peace be with us.

Hymn of Mar Abraham of Nithpar

Glory to the good one in whose love

has revealed his glory to mankind.

He created a mute nature from the dust,

and adorned it with a soul filled with treasures.

He placed his thanksgiving in a miserable body,

that the whole creation may sing his praise,

before we doze in the sleep of death.

During the long night we recall death,

which shuts our mouth and puts us to silence.

The just who praise him during the night

are alive even when they die,

but the evil who deny his great glory,

are dead even when they are alive.

Let us wake our bodies through prayer

and praise the hidden power,

that we may be friends of the wise virgins

whom our Lord praised.

On that night when he shakes the world,

let us gaze upon the Son while wide awake.

And so let us not drown in desire,

that we may see his glory on the day he dawns.

Let us be watchful servants before him at the hour

when he leads away the sons of his bride chamber.

The evil will remain in torture

and from afar the door of mercy will be shut.

While we live, let us work as we can,

for after death is the day of recompense.

The body that wearies itself in prayer

will fly through the air on the day of resurrection,

will see the Lord without shame,

and will enter with him into the kingdom.

The angels and the just will love him,

they who kept vigil and labored in prayer.

Blessed is the one who made us vessels of praise,

and placed his thanksgiving in the mouth of the dust.

Glory to the mercy of him who has given

the earthly a share with the spiritual,

that they may sing, on every night,

and at every time, “holy his name.”

Let us all proclaim his praise

forever and ever, amen, amen.

   we implore you…

* O one who glorified in heaven and worshipped

   on earth, we implore you…

* Give us victory, O Christ our Lord, in your coming,

Blood, and have mercy on us…

Closing Prayer: O tender, merciful, and compassionate one, whose door is opened to the repentant, and who calls unceasingly to sinners, that they may approach him in repentance: open, our Lord and God, the door of mercy to our prayer, accept our supplication, and grant our requests in your mercy from your rich and overflowing treasury, O good one who does not withhold his mercy or his gifts from the needy or afflicted, his servants who call and plead to him at all times, O Lord of all, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, forever.

People: Amen.

But you, Lord God, are merciful and compassionate,

longsuffering and great in grace and truth:

     turn to me and have mercy on me;

give strength to your servant,

     and save your handmaid’s son.
